In my role overseeing production in Microsoft’s nanotechnology laboratory, I focused on driving excellence in sustainability, quality, and a positive work culture. I led 3 teams of skilled Senior Lab Engineers, Lab Engineers and Shift Leads in Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Project, working at the intersection of production and R&D to meet complex technical demands.
Key Responsibilities and Achievements:
• Environmental Health & Safety (EHS): Prioritized EHS standards, ensuring a safe work environment that met rigorous compliance requirements. I implemented and enforced best practices that significantly reduced safety risks and enhanced operational reliability.
• Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Process Development: Collaborated in the creation of SOPs and led innovative process improvements tailored to the unique challenges of nanotechnology production, resulting in greater efficiency, consistency, and quality control.
• Data-Driven Insights: Leveraged Power BI and understanding of SQL to gather, analyze, and visualize data, providing actionable insights that supported operational improvements, sustainable resource use, and decision-making.
• Technical Training and Mentorship: Conducted in-depth technical training for new Lab Engineers, ensuring high competency levels and strong alignment with project goals. Additionally, I mentored Shift Leads to build their leadership capabilities, equipping them to guide their teams effectively and foster a collaborative, productive environment.
Through this role, I focused on creating a sustainable, high-quality production environment while fostering a healthy work culture that supports professional growth, teamwork, and innovation. I also was simultaneously running my own team as Production Technical Lead at this time.
• Team Leadership & Operations Management: Led a team of Senior Lab Engineers and Lab Engineers, overseeing day-to-day operations and fostering a collaborative, high-performance work environment. Conducted regular 1:1 sessions to identify opportunities for improvement, streamline workflows, and create growth pathways for team members.
• Hands-On Technical Expertise: Directly managed and operated advanced nanotechnology tools, including ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition), AOI (Automated Optical Inspection), DSM (Dual Side Measurement), Ellipsometrey, Metrology, and Confidential Replication tools. Applied deep technical knowledge to troubleshooting, tool maintenance, and process optimization.
• Process Development & Data Management: Led efforts in process development and R&D tasks, working closely with Development, Quality and Manufacturing Engineers to enhance nanotechnology production. Regularly conducted data input and analysis, creating templates to improve operator efficiency and streamline production tasks.
• Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Responsible for the hands-on maintenance, chemical handling, and troubleshooting of lab equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal functionality of critical tools.
• Continuous Improvement: Developed and implemented operator-friendly templates and documentation to ensure that lab procedures were efficient, consistent, and easy for team members to follow, reducing errors and increasing throughput.
