Noora has been in the digital design field for about 20 years, with the last 10 years focused particularly on UX and user-centric design methods. Her career journey includes working at award-winning global digital agencies as well as software companies specializing in product design. She has collaborated in various R&D teams, developing products across multiple platforms, from mobile apps to cybersecurity software.
In her previous role as a Senior UX Designer, her main responsibilities included prototyping, conducting usability tests and design research, and contributing to the development of design systems. She crafted and executed usability test plans, recruited participants, moderated sessions, and synthesized findings to inform iterative design improvements. Noora also collaborated closely with cross-functional teams consisting of product owners, developers, and other designers. She has gained a deep understanding of the true power and importance of sharing learnings and inspiring colleagues.
During her longest-standing client project at Ericsson, Noora regularly shared the latest trends and ideas in design meetings. Together with her client, she also spoke at the company’s tech talk webinar about how a user-centered mindset was integrated into product development and what it meant to be the first product to adopt the new Ericsson Design System.
When faced with design challenges, Noora's approach is rooted in a comprehensive understanding of the user experience. She utilizes benchmarking, desk studies, interviews, and usability testing to gather insights. Her approach is user-centric, and she prefers involving people in the design process whenever possible. One of her strengths is understanding technical possibilities, thanks to her studies that include markup languages and coding.
End customer: Ericsson, ESM Team
While at Idean, Noora was contracted as a consultant for Ericsson for nearly two years. For this reason, the project is highlighted in more detail.
Ericsson Security Manager is the 5G cybersecurity platform that addresses the needs of next-generation security operations by making security visible and automating the security processes. Ericsson Security Manager provides security policy-driven automation, compliance monitoring, and security analytics functions to protect networks, including 5G and IoT threats.
The purpose was to ensure dedication and continuity in Ericsson's product development work and enhance design maturity of Ericsson's internal design team.
Responsibilities:
-
Achievements:
Strengthened Ericsson's design competence for nearly two years, with her contract being renewed every three months. She adopted the client’s working culture, equipment, and Scrum-friendly ways of working.
Noticed that the product was not responsive and did not adapt to large screens. She began advocating for responsive design within Ericsson's product team by facilitating workshops and including key stakeholders in the design process, such as product owners, technical architects, and developers. Responsive design was added to the roadmap and given high priority. Today, the product is responsive.
Promoted a human-centered design approach and its benefits to the entire R&D team, including product owners, developers, and other designers. One challenge was that client companies didn’t understand what they would gain from investing their time in user testing. Ericsson's key personnel, working closely with customers, learned how to communicate the benefits of user testing and research to client companies, encouraging them to participate in user test sessions in the future.

Product Owner, Ericsson:
“When we get to the implementation phase of the responsiveness that Noora has been driving, there will probably be lot of side-by-side work to see what can be done and what is reasonable. However, I see responsiveness as something we just cannot ignore much longer.”
Service designer, Ericsson:
“Good news! Client agreed that we really need feedback from actual users. They proposed us to have interviews first with their service managers, who spend most of their time with their customers. Anyway, I am super happy about this, thanks a lot especially Noora Iso-Kuusela for the help with the presentations.”
Salla Rantamäki, design lead at Ericsson:
"Noora has been working in our team as a UX designer, with special focus on prototypes and UI design. She indeed has a very good eye on visualizations as well as complex interactions, and has been a big help in the team in our daily work as well as with our design system and how to develop it further. During the 2020's remote work phase, we have very effectively collaborated in a pair design mode and held remote workshops, which has allowed us to quickly iterate through several levels of design together, in a new and demanding situation. Noora is always full of ideas and up-to-date on newest trends and developments on the field. She is able to see more than just one solution to a problem and doesn't get discouraged when facing obstacles. All in all, it has been great working with her."
Oscar Hamren, Developer:
"I have been working together with Noora for long and she is a great UX designer and colleague. She can design everything from pixel perfect components to large entities of highly technical applications. For me as a developer, Noora is a great team member who makes it easy for me to implement designs, she helps me in clarifying how the design should work and also involves me into the design process. This does not only create designs that are great from an end users point of view but also are technically viable and scales well. In addition, Noora is active in sharing her knowledge with other designers and whole organisations. She presents at events and can communicate the importance of great design well to large audiences."
Noora relaxes by staying active and spending time in nature with her family and dogs, providing the perfect balance to office work. She breeds and trains Belgian Shepherds for working dog trials and dog shows, which requires teamwork and teaching skills. Working with both people and dogs to achieve goals demands both communication and empathy. In the summer, Noora enjoys unwinding at the summer cottage, and in the fall, her favorite activities are mushroom and berry picking.
